A youth was killed and another was injured after the autorickshaw they were travelling in crashed into a cement mixer at Vikhroli on Monday morning. The incident took place near Godrej Colony in Parksite at 11am.
According to the police, the deceased, Mohammad Qureshi (22), and his friend Sujata Dhavle (17) were on their way to the latter’s college, Asmita Junior College at Kannamawar Nagar in Vikhroli (E). The autorickshaw driver was, however, driving down a steep slope in high speed and rammed the cement mixer.
While Qureshi succumbed to his injuries, Dhavle was admitted to Godrej Hospital. The driver, Yeshwant Singh (22), was booked for rash and negligent driving.
Raju Shirke, sub-inspector Parksite police station, said Qureshi worked at his father’s shop in Chandivali. “The cement mixer had slowed down to take a turn into Godrej Colony. But, since Singh was in high speed, he lost control of the auto and crashed into the mixer. We have booked him under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 338 (endangering life of personal safety of others),” Shirke said.
N Shetty, a friend of the deceased, told Hindustan Times that he had met Qureshi on Sunday night. “We were together till 12.30am. He was very happy as his family was starting another store in the area and he was to be in-charge. He was an ambitious person who multi-tasked between working at his father’s store and providing labour for construction sites. He would also drive autos.”
