The Dharavi police on Sunday arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly molesting an 11-year-old girl who lives in his neighborhood, after choking her with a cloth laced with chemicals.

The police have arrested the accused, Muthuswamy Tewar, 36, in connection with the incident.

The girl was playing in her neigbourhood when some children threw her footwear near Tewar's house. "The accused was in an inebriated condition. He pulled her inside when she started crying. According to the neighbours, she was kept locked for more than an hour," the victim's uncle told HT.

The girl came home crying and narrated the incident to her mother following which her family confronted Tewar. Residents of the locality gathered at the spot and took the accused to the police station while the girl was taken for a medical examination.

The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and section 8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
