An autorickshaw driver was arrested for robbing a 72-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) at Ghatkopar of his gold chain. The victim Ramesh Shah, who came to the city from California three days ago, took down the autorickshaw number and the police arrested the driver within two hours.

On Tuesday evening, Shah took an autorickshaw from a hotel in Andheri (East) where he was staying. He asked the driver to take him to Ghatkopar where Shah was to see a doctor. He however could not locate the clinic at Ghatkopar (East), and asked the driver to drop him near the Eastern Express Highway.

Shah and the driver, Dilip Dongare, 22, got into an argument over the fare. Shah allegedly paid the driver Rs100 instead of Rs300. Dongare contacted his accomplice Bhansi Bhandari and both accosted Shah who had walked some distance away.

The duo allegedly snatched Shah’s gold chain weighing 20 grams (worth about Rs40,000). Shah took down the autorickshaw registration number and lodged a complaint with the Pant Nagar police. The police tracked down Dongare at his Kamraj Nagar residence in Ghatkopar (East).

“We arrested Dongare on charge of theft and are on the have recovered the chain,” said MS Suryavanshi, senior inspector.
