A five-month-old girl, presumably abandoned by her parents, was discovered at a municipal hospital in Thane on Thursday. The wailing baby was found by a patient in the waiting room at Nirmaladevi Chintamani Dighe Aarogya Kendra at Gandhinagar.

"I was inside my cabin when a patient came in saying that there was baby that was crying aloud and there was no one to look after it," said medical officer Dr. Vijaya Kadam.

"I went out and saw the baby lying on a ledge. There were a few clothes next to her and a torn immunisation card. It turned out that she was born at the same hospital. We pulled out the name and address of her mother from our records," she added.

The child's mother was identified as a woman from Andhra Pradesh who worked as a construction labourer at a site near Hyde Park Complex on Ghodbunder Road.

Armed with the address, a team from the hospital went to the shanties located near the construction site to look for the mother. "We found the house locked. When we enquired with the contractor, he told us that the woman had taken Rs2,000 from him and told him that she was returning to her village. We then took the child to the police station," Kadam said. The Vartaknagar police station has registered a case against the woman under section 317 (abandonment of a child under 12 years by the parent or caretaker) of the IPC.

The baby has been shifted to a children's welfare home in Navi Mumbai.
