A case of murder has been registered in the case of the newborn whose body was found on the tracks at Bhayander railway station on Thursday. The Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) said the child's post mortem report revealed she had been strangled to death before being dumped on the tracks.
Praful Kshirsagar, senior inspector of Vasai GRP, said the post mortem reports arrived on Saturday and a case was registered against the unidentified accused under IPC sections 302 for murder and 318 for concealment of birth by secretly disposing of a body. Forensic experts have preserved the infant's viscera for chemical analysis.
"We have found CCTV footage which shows an arm extending from a running train and throwing the newborn on the tracks. But, the person's face cannot be seen. Our investigation is in progress," Kshirsagar said.
The police said they had begun checking hospitals and maternity homes in the vicinity for records on female newborns.
The police had been informed about the body by an unidentified caller. "When we went to the spot we found the child had been born not more than two days ago. The child was declared dead by doctors," Kshirsagar said.
