In yet another case of a BEST bus being involved in an accident, a 46-year-old BEST bus driver knocked down a 31-year-old biker at Chembur at Monday night. The victim’s pregnant wife was riding pillion during the accident.
While she escaped with minor injuries, Bunty Murukkal, the biker, sustained serious injuries and is said to be in critical condition.
There was some confusion after the police found a gun at the spot where Murakkal fell. It was later found that it was a toy gun that Murakkal was carrying.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 9.50pm on Monday when Gopinath Pujari was driving the BEST bus towards Chembur railway station. Murukkal, travelling with his pregnant wife Chaitali, was riding towards the Gowanpada area around the same time.
Murukkal’s bike collided with the BEST bus and he and his wife were thrown off his bike. Bunty and Chaitali were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the BEST bus was also arrested soon after the accident.
“Bunty sustained severe injuries and is now unconscious,” said Dilip Yadav, senior inspector of RCF police station. Bunty’s wife, however, is safe, said an officer from RCF police station.
“The road where the accident took place is narrow and there is no divider. This could have led to the accident,” said an officer.
The RCF police have booked Pujari under sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 of IPC.
