The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) have decided to withdraw their blue-coloured single decker buses. There are six such buses, which have the contact number of an advertising agency on them.

The decision was taken after the BEST committee members — representing various political parties — objected saying that the buses violated the contract.

“The contract was for 125 double-decker buses only. However, after three of them were removed from service, the contractor was given permission to include six single decker buses in the contract,” said BEST Committee member Ravi Raja.

The BEST members also alleged that this resulted in revenue losses for them as they were earning only Rs7,500 from advertising on the buses. On the other hand, advertising on King Long buses earns them around Rs75,000 per bus.

The general manager of BEST, OP Gupta, was not present while this decision was taken.

With Gupta out till July 22, additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar has been handed charge, although she was not present at the meeting for administrative reasons.
