About 178 buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission (JNNURM) are missing from city roads as the state and Central governments have not paid the remaining amount of Rs 91 crore to Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST).

BEST is getting air-conditioned and non-AC red buses under JNNURM at a cost of Rs 284 crore. “We have written several letters and made many calls to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asking him to give the remaining funds for these buses. We also asked the government to help in sorting the issue of hike in bus fare, but we haven’t received any replies,” said BEST chairman Sanjay Potnis.

The Centre has paid Rs 36 crore while the state has paid Rs 15 crore to BEST for these buses.
