A 58-year-old woman was found murdered at her residence at Datar Colony in Bhandup (East) on Friday evening.

Preliminary investigation hint at the possibility of the murderer being known to the victim, police said.

According to the Kanjurmarg police, Sangeeta Sawant, who lived on the first floor of Amardeep Building, was killed with a sharp weapon.

All her belonging were found scattered on the floor and her cupboards ransacked, indicating that robbery was the motive.

"It appears the killer was known to the victim as there are no signs of forced entry," said Quaiser Khalid, additional commissioner of police, east region.

The incident came to light when the victim's 25-year-old son came home around 5pm and found the door ajar.

He found Sawant lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom with injuries on her body, the police said.

"The finger print experts and officials from the forensic science laboratory from Kalina have inspected the crime scene and further investigations are on in this regard," said Khalid.

Police sources said the Sawants were carrying out renovation work in their 1BHK resident and the labourers are now being questioned.

A case of murder and robbery has been registered, the police said.

Residents, however, said they were shocked to hear the news of the murder.

“There is a police chowky near the building. It is shocking to see how bold these anti-social elements have become," said a resident from Datar colony.
