Manisha Gharat, the 20-year-old fulltime maid of producer-director Vikram Bhatt was well aware that CCTV cameras and would turn the lens to another direction before stealing from her employer’s residence.

However, she was not aware of the fact that the lens of the cameras installed was of broad range and in many videos she has been caught steeling in the cameras.

This landed Gharat behind bars on Thursday after Bhatt lodged a complaint with them on Wednesday.

Gharat was arrested for stealing artefacts and ornaments worth Rs 18 lakh from Bhatt’s residence in a span of over six months.

The accused had been working for Bhatt since over two years before which her mother had served the family for around 17 years and hence Gharat was one of the trusted employees. However, problems started when trinkets started disappearing from Bhatt’s Versova residence around six months ago.

“After the incidents of thefts increased at our residence we installed CCTV cameras to find out who was behind it. The cameras were installed in front of her and she was well aware of the places where they had been kept. So whenever she wanted to steal something she would turn the camera lens to another direction not realising that the camera could still capture her image,” said Bhatt.

A few days back Gharat stole a silver artefact from Bhatt’s residence. As it was an expensive artefact the Bhatts immediately checked the CCTV footage and found Gharat to be behind the thefts.

“Gharat admitted to the thefts. We have recovered the stolen booty from her,” said Sharad Borse, senior inspector of Versova police station.
