Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal will hold a mega rally through his organization Akhil Bharatiya Mahatma Phule Samta Parishad in Delhi on August 23 to demand independent census for the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Bhujbal, who has been camping in the capital for the last two days told media that the rally would have Samata Parishad participants from at least 11 other states including UP, Uttaranchal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat.

On Monday, Bhujbal spent the day meting up with various national leaders including Home Minister P Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Law Minister Veerapan Moily, MP Sharad Yadav, Social Justice Minister Mukul Wasnik to mobilize support for his demand for caste based census in the ongoing 2011 exercise.

Bhujbal said, "The last OBC census was carried out in 1931 and since then there has been no factual data on this community. All government policies are with that population in mind."

He quoted observations by the Planning Commission in its 11th five year plan: "Unless there is factual data on the OBCs, there cannot be any social, economic and political equality for this deprived population."
