A 24-year-old relationship manager with a private bank was arrested after his car crushed a man on the Western Express Highway on Sunday.

A security agency supervisor, Ramakant Mishra (35), was riding his motorcycle and a security guard, Pankaj Kumar Upadhyay (24), was on the pillion when the black Maruti Swift hit the two-wheeler.

Amit Kapoor (24), a relationship manager with a private bank at Girgaum Chowpatty, was driving and his three friends were with him.

Kapoor tried to flee but was nabbed by the police.

“He has been booked for rash and negligent driving and will be produced in court on Monday,” said senior inspector Anil Bhise of the Goregaon (East) police station.

Mishra, a resident of Nagardas road in Andheri (East), was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

Upadhyay is recuperating at BSES-MG hospital in Andheri.

The victims were going towards Malad.

"The accused, who was driving rashly, lost balance. The car dashed against a stationary call centre bus and then collided with the bike," said an officer.

According to the Goregaon East police, the accident occurred around 4.52 am opposite Oberoi towers.

The police said that after the crashed into the bus, the driver, who was sleeping inside, woke up and called one of his friends. The driver, then, chased the Swift car on his friend’s motorcycle.

Meanwhile, passersby and residents gathered and informed the police. "Within minutes, a mobile van that was patrolling the area, reached the spot and chased the car while it was fleeing towards South. The police managed to nab Kapoor who was trying to escape after abandoning the car. The other occupants managed to flee," the officer added.
