Biker throws acid on bar singer

A singer in a bar sustained burns after two unidentified men on a motorcycle threw acid on her while she was travelling in an autorickshaw on Tuesday morning.

“Jamuna Dera, 25, who sings at a bar, suffered 20% burns on her face, the autorickshaw driver too sustained minor burns,” said Aswati Dorje, deputy commissioner of police, zone 5.

After 3am, after Dera, who is employed with Sibbu Palace Bar and Restaurant in Bandra (West), hired a rickshaw to reach her Chembur residence.

As the autorickshaw neared PMG colony in Dharavi, two men on a motorcycle rode close to the rickshaw. Suddenly the man who was riding pillion flung acid on Dera. Some of the chemical fell on the driver, Vikas Kumar, too. While the bike sped away, Kumar managed to drive to Bhabha hospital at Kurla.

Kumar was discharged after receiving first aid. Dera is still recuperating at the hospital.

“Both Dera and Kumar did not see the men or note down the motorcycle’s registration number. She has also not told us who she suspects could be behind the attack,” said N More, police sub inspector, Dharavi police station.
