Blaming a traffic constable for a bike-borne couple skidding on the JJ flyover, several other bike riders allegedly assaulted the policeman on Thursday.
The constable, attached with the Pydhonie traffic police, was trying to stop the couple, as two-wheelers are banned on the flyover, officials said.
According to the police, constable Parshuram Laxman Gaikwad was posted near the Byculla-end of the flyover. Around 4:30pm, a couple on a bike drove from Byculla towards CST.
When Gaikwad tried to stop them, the rider tried to speed up. He, however, lost control of the vehicle and it skid.
"The couple fell on the road. When other riders saw them, they thought the accident was Gaikwad's fault. They then started to assault him and then fled the spot," said Shashikant Surve, senior inspector, JJ Marg police station.
Gaikwad was taken to JJ Hospital where he was given treatment and was discharged soon after. He had suffered minor injuries to his hand and had bruises on his body, officials said.
The constable has, however, noted the registration number of the bikers that attacked him. Also, a CCTV camera at the spot has captured the entire incident and shows them fleeing the spot.
The police have registered a case against the unknown accused under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is being carried out.
