If you are caught speeding on your bike without a helmet on the Western Express Highway, you may be in for an unwanted haircut.

When the Kherwadi police arrested 13 bikers on Thursday, they were brought to the police station and given haircuts. According to the officers, most bikers who are caught speeding are youngsters with ‘funky hairstyles’ who ride without helmets.

“To ensure the youngsters do not drive in a rash and negligent manner again, we decided to teach them a lesson by cutting their hair. The barber was called to the police station and three to four bikers were given haircuts,” said a police officer.

“Most of these were heading towards south and they could not tell us where were they were going. They were brought to the police station and arrested under sections 279 (rash driving) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code,” said senior inspector Sujata Patil of Kherwadi police station.

“We conduct nakabandis on the WEH on regular basis. On Thursday, the deputy commissioner of police Virendra Mishra and senior inspector Sujata Patil were present at the time of nakabandi. We caught 13 bikers, who were speeding without helmets. Barricades have been put up on the WEH at Bandra railway bridge,” said another officer.

Danish Shaikh, a 20-year-old hotel management student from Kurla who was among those caught, told Hindustan Times: I paid Rs3,500 to style my hair only two weeks ago. The police could have just fined us for breaking rules. This has been humiliating. I wasn’t even speeding.” Ansari Saud, 20, a final year of mechanical engineering student, said, “I am not aware about the laws. What the police did is unfair and embarrassing.”

The stretch between Bandra and Western Express Highway is infamous speeding bikers and biker gangs also ride along this stretch and perform dangerous stunts, said an officer.

“These bikers While riding in high speed, these bikers drive dangerously close to other vehicles. They do not understand that such kind of driving not only put their lives at risk but it can risks the lives of other motorist” added another officer.
