Dogged by delays, the civic body has now started imposing fines on contractors who do not start work on major roads on schedule. In the last one month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected over Rs47 lakh as fines from errant contractors.

The work includes reconstruction, cement concretisation and resurfacing of 161 major roads, for which the BMC awarded contracts worth Rs570 crore in September. The work was to start after the work orders were issued to all contractors on September 29. In many cases, however, there were delays.

Therefore, the civic roads department issued letters to all contractors asking them to start work by November 12, failing which they would be fined.

Satish Badve, chief engineer, roads department, said: “The delays may affect our plan so we have imposed fines on them. Now, almost all road work has begun. The first phase of the work will have to be completed by February 31, and the last leg by May 31.”
