The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked all its nodal census officers to verify whether dummy enumerators were carrying out the exercise.
The corporation said it would take strict action against the enumerators and their supervisor if it found that the exercise was being outsourced.
“All the medical health officers have been asked to verify this and submit their reports,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar, who is in charge of the exercise.
The municipal corporation wants to make sure only authorised people are conducting the census after an incident of school children being roped in for the exercise in LIC Colony, Borivli, came to light.
A preliminary report of the investigation has said that the enumerator of the house block at LIC Colony was a retired BMC official and the supervisor is a serving civic employee. They will be served show cause notices.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will decide on the action to be taken against them under the Citizenship Act after they explain their side.
The Act provides for an imprisonment of six months with a penalty. The census exercise will conclude on July 15.
“We will also take corrective measures, if needed, and go back to all those houses these children visited. If we find lapses, we will fill the forms again,” Mhaiskar added.
