The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take a call on the temporary dais erected by Shiv Sainiks in memory of their leader Bal Thackeray on the Shivaji Park ground only after December 6.
On December 6, lakhs of people are expected to descend upon the ground to pay homage to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his death anniversary.
"We will take a call on the temporary stage only after December 6," said Rahul Shewale, chairperson of the civic body's standing committee. He also said further decisions on the memorial for the late Sena chief would be taken only next week.
At present, a makeshift dais has been set up on the ground, a few feet from the spot where the late Sena leader was publicly cremated on November 18. A photograph has been placed on the dais so that Sainiks and other followers can pay
With almost 15 lakh people expected to gather at the Shivaji Park grounds, the decision to delay the issue of orders to move the dais has been taken to deal with a plausible law and order situation.
Eyebrows, however, have been raised for this delay in issuing an order because the Sena was granted permission under special provisions of the BMC Act to use Shivaji Park for a day so that it could hold Thackeray's cremation on November 18.
On Friday, bureaucrat-turned-activist Abha Singh filed a complaint with the MCZMA on Friday, asking that the memorial to be pulled down and action taken against those responsible for allowing it to be erected.
