Aiming at taking concrete steps to overhaul the deteriorating condition of city’s open spaces, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to establish a separate cell to look into the development and maintenance of open spaces.
“The cell will comprise of dedicated civic staff who will focus on the planning and development of recreation grounds, gardens and parks in the city. The cell will be headed by a deputy chief engineer,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner, at the civic standing committee meeting on Wednesday.
Currently, the functions of the gardens department are highly dependent on other departments of the civic body, causing delays in executing garden development works.
This delay also means that almost every year, an amount of around Rs8-10 crore, meant for developing new gardens, is underutilised and lapses at the end of the financial year.
The civic body has allocated an annual budget of Rs51.33 crore for the year 2013-14.
