The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent a letter to the commissioner of police asking him to initiate necessary action against the Shiv Sena for not vacating the Shivaji Park ground after the last ritesof party chief Bal Thackeray were performed there on November 18.

“Permission was given to the party for only one day, for the cremation. This is a law and order situation, so the municipal commissioner has sent a letter to the police commissioner asking him to take necessary action,” said a senior civic official.

However, the Sena-run civic body has not served any notice to the Sena asking it to vacate the ground.

“We have not received any notice,” said Rahul Shewale, Sena corporator and standing committee chairman.
Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte could not be reached for his comment.

The Sena has set up a makeshift memorial for Thackeray at the cremation site.

Though it is exploring other options in Dadar for a memorial, the party has remained firm on its demand for a memorial at the spot where the Sena chief was cremated.

While the Thackeray family has said that there should be no controversy over the memorial, Sena leaders Manohar Joshi and Sanjay Raut have said that the memorial should come up at Shivaji Park itself.

Joshi had also said they would not allow the law to block the memorial, after which Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said nobody would be allowed to flout the law.
Residents of the area have also been vocal in their protests against a memorial at the maidan.
Shivaji Park, which is marked as a recreation ground in the 1991 development plan, is used for sporting activities.
