The LT Marg police have asked the Regional Transport Office to trace the owner of the blue Maruti 800 in which a decomposed man’s body was found on Thursday.

Police said the car (MH01 5525) parked near SK Patil garden in Marine Lines, had been lying abandoned for the last 20 years.

On Thursday, at 7.30 pm, the police received a call from locals informing them about foul smell emanating from the car.

The police reached the spot and found a 45-year-old man’s body in the car.

Police suspect the man was a beggar and must have entered the car to protect himself from rains. He must have fallen asleep and later died of a heart attack.

"Locals say that they had seen the man in the area but none could recollect his name. So, he remains unidentified,” said Police Inspector Rajendra More.

The body has been sent for post-mortem at JJ Hospital. "We are awaiting for the reports to find out if the man was killed," he said.

However, police officers said it would take time to find the car's owner. "The lane near SK Patil garden is full of abandoned cars. It becomes difficult for us to patrol the area," said a police officer.
