The body of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl was found in an open space close to Vij Bhavan at Nariman Point on Wednesday evening, police said. This is the same spot where the decomposed body of another three-year-old girl was found two months ago.
Police said the toddler was identified as Karishma Chavan, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar Colony at Sassoon Dock in Cuffe Parade.
"The girl went missing on Tuesday afternoon around 2.30 pm when she was playing outside her house. Her parents were away at work while her grandmother was at home when the incident occurred," said Iqbal Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (Colaba Division).
The police said Karishma's father, Vijay Chavan, a fish vendor, had filed a complaint with the Colaba police station on Tuesday night.
"After Chavan filed the complaint, we initiated a hunt to locate the girl. While the police were searching for the child, they found her body in the open space at Nariman Point around 5 pm on Wednesday," Shaikh said.
The police confirmed the girl had injuries on her head and that she had been murdered.
"It is certain that the girl was murdered, but it is not clear if she was sexually exploited. We have sent the body to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem and will know the details once the report is available," Shaikh said.
