A woman’s body was found in a 12-car empty local train at Kalwa train yard on Friday night. This is probably the fourth instance this year where a woman’s body was found either in a train or a railway station.
The unidentified woman, in her early twenties, was found by a railway protection force constable around 11:45pm. She was wearing a black and mehendi-coloured chequered sleeveless salwar-kurta, said the police. No jewellery or other valuables like mobile or purse was found on or near her body.
The Thane government railway police have registered a case of murder and sent the body to Thane civil hospital. The police are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain whether she was raped.
“The train left from Kalyan at 10:26pm and reached the car-shed at 11:28pm. The body was found in the fourth general compartment from the motorman’s cabin at the Kalyan end, which is partially used for luggage,” said assistant commissioner of police (Kalyan) P Y Sardar.
“There were four stab wounds on her chest. Ants had gathered around the wounds and a stench was emanating from the body. She was killed somewhere else,” he added.
“Doctors say she must have died 10 to 12 hours before the body was found. The train must have stopped at several places and the body has probably been placed between the two stations. We have sought details of which places the train halted at. We usually have guards posted in trains only when there are passengers. We will be writing to the divisional railway manager to enhance the security,” said deputy commissioner of police (central zone) Anil Tamaichekar.
