Two lakh members of the Dawoodi Bohra community from across the world have gathered in the city for the annual Moharram discourse by Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (99), the community’s spiritual leader.
Addressing a crowd of more than 30,000 followers at the Saifee Masjid in Bhendi Bazar, Sayedna, narrated the tragic martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed.
To ensure the comfort of followers, 60 centres have been built across the city and suburbs where Syendna’s speech will be relayed live on big screens. “In the 10 days of Moharram, people from every centre get a chance to see his holiness in person at the Bhendi Bazaar masjid,” said Shaikh Abdeali Bhanpurawala, executive secretary of government affairs of the Bohra community.
Syedna also stressed the importance of family values. “There should be mutual respect between couples and upbringing of children should be done with much care,” said Syedna.
Meanwhile, the Bohra community is already planning for the Syedna’s birthday celebrations. The Syedna will turn 100 in March 2011.
Community spokesperson, Quereshi Rashib, said that 4000 Bohari houses in Bhendi Bazaar would be redeveloped as part of the celebrations. “We are also organising car rallies and sports programmes to celebrate the occasion,” said Rashib.
