Getting a luxury tourist vehicle to take you and your family on your getaway during the Diwali weekend may not be very easy.
At least 200 private tourist vehicles have been booked for American President Barack Obama’s visit to Mumbai on November 6 and 7.
Government sources indicated four-wheeler cars, trucks and tempos and luxury buses, have been booked to provide logistical support to Obama’s entourage.
The US Consulate refused to divulge any information about procurement of these vehicles. “We haven’t received information about getting these vehicles,” said an official from the US Consulate, requesting anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
At least 95 luxury four-wheelers, including Mercedes Benz, Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord cars, will be deployed, government sources said. More than 50 Volvo and Mercedes buses will be allotted for carrying people and handling other logistics, while at least 30 trucks and tempos will be used to carry Obama’s luggage.
“These vehicles will be used by the delegates and security personnel assisting President Barack Obama,” a senior government official said, requesting anonymity.
Sources said these vehicles will be stationed at the airport and at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, where Obama and his wife, Michelle.
“We have not received any intimation on the details of Obama’s visit,” said a senior transport department official. Transport department officials said the regional transport offices will be ready to provide more vehicles in case there is a need.
