A 26-year-old electrician was arrested in Borivli on Friday for allegedly assaulting his wife.
Pratima Dubey (26) lodged a complaint against her husband, Parshuram, and her in-laws for allegedly harassing and assaulting her.
Pratima has been married to Parshuram for more than eight years. She was at her native place in Uttar Pradesh and came to Mumbai two months ago.
Police said Parshuram suspected Pratima of having an extra-marital affair. “Whenever I would speak with my parents over the phone, my husband and his family would taunt me, as if I speaking to other men,” Pratima said in her complaint. “They would harass me mentally and physically.”
The police said the tension had escalated so much that Pratima’s father rushed to her home in Borivli on Thursday and decided to seek a divorce for his daughter. “However, the accused assaulted Pratima after her father left,” said Senior Police Inspector, Rajendra Thakur, of the Kasturba police station.
Thakur said Pratima ran out of her home. A middle-aged man saw her standing near the Western Express Highway. He admitted her to a private hospital, where she rested until Friday morning.
Pratima asked the man to drop her to Kalyan, where her sister stays. Pratima then went to Kasturba police station to file a complaint of harassment against her husband and in-laws.
The police arrested Parshuram’s brothers, Bharatkumar (30), Laxminar-ayan (30) and Krishna (24).
