A 22-year-old woman was gang-raped by three persons at her Borivli (West) residence on Monday night in the presence of her 25-year-old husband. Two of the three accused were arrested on Tuesday morning and have been remanded in police custody until May 4, the police said.
A native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, the victim was living with her husband, Raju Chowdhary, 25, a railway snacks vendor, at Ganpat Patil Nagar slums in Borivli (West) after they tied the knot in 2007.
Assuming her husband was away as he kept late hours, the accused knocked on the victim’s door at around 10.45pm on Monday. They were startled to find Chowdhary at home and began assaulting him with a knife. They slashed the victim’s hand too when she protested.
“The men created a partition in the house with a bedsheet, and while two of them held Chow-dhary at knifepoint, the third raped her. They took turns, and fled after warning the couple against informing the police,” said Suresh Kilje, senior inspector of MHB Colony police station.
“The woman called the police control and said that she and her husband had been assaulted. It was only after she was brought to the police station that she confided in a lady constable,” said Kilje.
Two of the accused, Harish aka Jeetu Dantani, 25, and Sunny Singh, 25, both unemployed, were arrested on Tuesday morning. The knife is yet to be recovered, police said.
