The desire to own the latest video game has gotten a 14-year-old boy a criminal record and landed him in a children’s remand home.
The Class 8 student created a fake Facebook profile of Bigg Boss 4 contestant Anchal Kumar and tried to con her friends into giving him money, said the Chembur police who arrested him on Thursday.
“I got a friend request from that account on Tuesday. Later, I received a message from the account saying ‘I am in Canada for a show. I have lost my phone and am tensed and need Rs10,000.’ The message further stated that a boy would come to collect the money near a mall in Chembur,” said Vikram Ram, 31, the complainant in the case.
Ram found the message fishy and called Anchal, who confirmed that the account was not hers and nor was the message. “Moreover, Anchal’s name was spelt wrongly with two As. I kept messaging the impostor on Facebook and decided to meet him near the mall in Chembur. On Wednesday night, I reached the mall and caught the teenager,” said Ram.
Ram then approached a police combat vehicle outside the mall that directed him to Chembur police station. “Initially, there were jurisdiction issues between the Chembur and Govandi police. Finally, early on Thursday the Chembur police registered an FIR and the teenager was arrested,” he added.
BB Rathod, senior police inspector from Chembur police station, said, “The boy was fond of playing video games and needed money to buy one. He had sent similar messages to three to four other friends of the actress. We are investigating if there are more people involved in the case.”
The police said the boy did not know the legal consequences of impersonating someone on Facebook.
Ram said that they were other people involved because even after he caught the teenager, he kept getting messages from the fake account asking if the boy had reached the spot.
Police have seized the teenager’s computer from which, they suspect, he created the fake Facebook account of Anchal Kumar.
