A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped by three unidentified men while he was walking to his school in Bandra (West) early Monday morning. The boy (identity withheld) was released only after his father, a businessman, paid a ransom of Rs5 lakh to the kidnappers, police said.

The incident took place around 8am. “A Tata Indica stopped near the boy and three men car dragged him inside the vehicle and fled,” said an officer from Bandra police station.

The officer said the kidnappers called the boy’s fathers on Monday and demanded a ransom of Rs10 lakh. “While the boy’s father was talking to the kidnappers, the police was informed. Based on the kidnapper’s cell phone location, several policemen in civilian clothes started to patrol the areas where they were suspected to be hiding the boy.”

The kidnappers and the boy’s father finally agreed on Rs5 lakh. “As instructed, the boy’s father left a bag containing the cash on the railway tracks on Monday night. The boy was released next morning,” he said.

Pratap Dighavkar, deputy commissioner of police, zone 9, said, “Our investigation is in progress.”
