Like any coy new bride, she was a tad nervous on her first wedding night. But she certainly wasn’t prepared for the shock that lay in store.

The 25-year-old woman from Agripada, who was spending her first wedding night at a city hotel, was horrified to find the bridegroom pulling out his wig and taking off dentures.

Salma Ansari (25) (not her real name) lodged a police complaint the morning after, alleging that her husband had lied about his age and other personal information.

As per police records, the victim’s mother, a teacher, had got in touch with the Gulf-based groom, Abdullamiyan Akhtar Hussain Syed through an acquaintance.

As per police records, the alliance was set up in the last week of November, and it was decided to solemnise the marriage on December 3.

“The wedding was held in Pydhonie,” said Senior Police Inspector Pravin Gosawi.

At a South Mumbai hotel, the bride was in for a rude shock to find the man of her dreams had a wig and dentures on, the police said.

“He had claimed he is 27 years old but he looked much older,” the bride has said in her statement to the police on Friday night.

A relative said that during the mooh dikhai ritual (the first time that the groom comes face-to-face with his bride), Syed had gifted fake ornaments to the bride.

Syed and his father, Akhtar (53), have been arrested from their Jogeshwari residence.

The police, however, are a ambivalent about how genuine the bride’s claims are. “The wig and braces could have easily been noticed earlier,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity. “It’s a bit strange nobody noticed it earlier.”
