To meet the growing demand of power, which is in short supply, two Navi Mumbai-based brothers have invented a unique power plant to increase supply. Nagendra Singh, a BSc graduate in chemistry and a masters in marketing, along with brother Yogendra, a builder, have set up a power plant, which they have named ‘Nano power plant’ in their building.

The duo created a mechanism that uses gravitational force to generate electricity. The Singh brothers used daily-use articles from the household – flush siphon, bicycle chain, greabox, etc — to create the plant.

“We have been working on it, keeping the environment in mind, since the past four years,” said Yogendra. So how does the ‘Nano power plant’ work?

Two buckets are suspended against the wall from the terrace of their four-storey building with help of a pulley.

The system works on the basis of a seesaw mechanism, but vertically. When the flush siphon in one of the buckets touches the ground, the water in the bucket is drained out, which lifts the bucket to the top as the bucket on the other end with water is heavier and so it comes down. Once the bucket reaches the top, water is filled in the bucket through the same siphon.

While the buckets continue their vertical movement, the pulley rotates clockwise due to the special bicycle gearbox attached to it. As the cycle continues, it starts generating electricity with help from the dynamo attached to it.

Though an original idea, Nagendra doesn’t mind sharing it for the benefit of the society.
