A controversial builder from Navi Mumbai, Sunil Kumar, 50, was brutally assaulted and then shot at by two persons on Saturday morning. He died in hospital later. While one of the attackers escaped, Kumar’s staff and passers-by caught Venkatesh Shettiar, 35.

Kumar’s brother, Sanjeev, has named business rivals in the killing. The Vashi police have said they were investigating.

A resident of Sai Pride on Palm Beach Road, Kumar was shot at around 8.30am in the sector 28 area of Vashi. The attack took place outside his office, SK Brothers Builders and developers, just as he had got out of his BMW. The office is situated along the busy main road that connects Vashi to Kopar Khairane.

Ganpat Chavan, an employee, who was witness to the attack, said, “I was cleaning the office inside when I saw, on the CCTV screen, two men come on a motorcycle. They were carrying coconuts and garlands and some other puja material in their hands and approached Kumar.”

Chavan said, “Suddenly, they smashed a coconut on Kumar’s head and shot him. They then attacked him with knives and a chopper.” One of the attackers was in a security guard’s uniform, Chavan said.

Chavan said, “I sat on someone’s bike and we went after the attackers. I threw a stone at the man in the security guard’s uniform and he fell. We then caught him and handed him over to the police and gave them the pistol he was carrying.”

An unconscious Kumar was taken to Fortis hospital in Vashi, but was declared dead around 10.20am.

Police found a cut finger, five blanks, two knives and a chopper from the spot.

Senior inspector Raosaheb Sardesai of Vashi police said, “We will find out what exactly the issue is and get the killers.”
