On her deathbed, she wanted to ensure her 20-year-old daughter has a secure future. Instead, cancer patient, Harsha Mehta, is facing legal action for allegedly cheating people of Rs 65 lakh.
Mehta, who claims to be a financial consultant, has been charged with duping banks and people over the selling of a flat on M G Road, Kandivli.
She allegedly sold a flat she did not legally own by faking documents.
The police have enough evidence against the 48-year-old woman, but have decided not to arrest her on humanitarian grounds.
“She is bed-ridden. We will use options available under the Criminal Procedure Code to reach a conclusion in the case and then let the court decide,” Assistant Police Inspector, A. Todamal, of Charkop police station said.
Mehta’s husband Sudhir, a small businessman, refused to respond to this correspondent’s queries.
A woman at Mehta’s home at Emerald building in Aarey colony, Goregaon, refused to reveal her name, but said: “My mother is in a very serious state and it is no use discussing these cases.”
Mehta had bought a flat from Bipin Panchal, an assistant to a well-known music director, in 2009 but did not pay the entire amount.
The flat was not transferred to her name. Mehta allegedly made fake documents stating that she was the owner of the property.
She then sold the flat to 51-year-old Sunil Patel.
“After I took possession of the flat on paying Harsha Rs 65 lakh, I found that the flat belonged to someone else,” Patel said.
Panchal said: “Though I had not given her the flat keys, she got a duplicate key made and sold the flat to Patel.”
The police also learnt that Mehta has taken loans from several financial institutions by submitting forged papers.
Police allege Mehta has been cheating people since she was diagnosed with bone and breast cancer two years ago.
