The box containing 100 cartridges will enable the Versova police to track down the its owner, the police said. They found the box, a cache of 240 live cartridges, 140 rounds and another box containing 100 cartridges near Jankidevi School in Versova on Saturday.
The police said that unlike the live cartridges and rounds, the box will have a batch number that should help them trace the owner. "On the basis of the batch number on the box in which cartridges were found, we should be able to find out the ordinance unit where they were manufactured," said senior inspector of Versova police NK Mhetar.
When this information is found, a police team will go to the particular ordinance unit said the officer. "The unit should be able to tell us who received that particular batch. We should be able to trace down the owner soon," added Mhetar.
The police on Saturday registered a case against unknown persons under the Arms Act after cartridges and empty rounds were found in a playground near the Jankidevi public school located in Andheri West. The cartridges found in Versova had the mark of Indian Ordinance Factory on it.
Versova police, who have registered the case, will be making queries with the ordnance factories in Ambernath, Thane and Pune to find out about the box.
