The Pant Nagar police have registered a case against BJP MLA Prakash Mehta and 10 to 15 unidentified persons for allegedly assaulting two persons in Ghatkopar on Tuesday.
Police said the complainant, Ashok Murjibhai Bhanushali, 36, Congress general secretary (north east district), was seriously injured while his friend Rahul Desai has minor injuries in the incident.
Police said around 15 unidentified persons attacked Bhanushali and Desai outside a Congress party worker's office on 60 Feet Road in Ghatkopar at 8.30pm on Tuesday.
On Tuesday afternoon Mehta got into an altercation with Bhanushali's friend Nirmal Khetia. Khetia then contacted Bhanushali who reached the spot and got into in a verbal duel with Mehta, police said. At 8.30pm, around 15 unidentified persons armed with sticks and sharp weapons attacked Bhanushali.
"We have initiated a campaign to remove illegal food stalls on footpaths. As Mehta supports these illegal stalls, he decided to assault Khetia who is against them," said Manoj Dubey, Congress president.
Mehta refuted the allegations, saying it was done to gain political mileage.
