Catering manager held for raping teen

A 28-year-old catering manager was arrested on Tuesday for repeatedly raping a minor over several months. The victim, who is 15 years old, is four months pregnant. The accused, Sachin Verma, is a resident of a rented flat at Charkop, Kandivli (West). His office is in Gorai, Borivli (West).

A 28-year-old catering manager was arrested on Tuesday for repeatedly raping a minor over several months. The victim, who is 15 years old, is four months pregnant. The accused, Sachin Verma, is a resident of a rented flat at Charkop, Kandivli (West). His office is in Gorai, Borivli (West).

The police said the victim and the accused reside in the same locality. The victim lives with her mother while her father left them around four years ago to marry another woman. The victim's mother works in a private firm. The police said Verma visited the victim almost every day after her mother left for work. He used to gift the victim expensive objects.

"Verma is known to the victim and her mother. He used to also help the victim's mother financially," said a senior police official from Borivli police station, requesting anonymity.

The victim told the police in her statement that a few months ago, Verma approached her (victim) and tried to begin physical relationship with her. When the victim refused, he threatened her with dire consequences and told her that he was a criminal in his hometown in Madhya Pradesh. "The accused raped the victim and threatened to kill her mother if she told anyone," added the police officer.

Recently, when the victim told the accused that she was pregnant, he stopped visiting her and even changed his mobile number following which the victim told her mother and they approached the police. "We have registered a case under sections of rape and criminal intimidation against the accused. He will be produced in court on Wednesday," said Bhagwan Chate, senior police inspector.
