A local court on Thursday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to question Shyamvar Rai, Indrani Mukerjea’s driver, for two more days at the Arthur Road jail. The CBI had sought permission as the agency wanted to verify certain facts in the case. Indrani and Rai were both arrested for their alleged involvement in the Sheena Bora murder.

All four accused — media baron Peter Mukerjea, his wife Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and Indrani’s driver Rai — were produced before the court on Thursday. The court has extended their judicial custody till April 13. Further, the court has asked the CBI to file a reply on Peter’s bail application on the next hearing date.

The court, meanwhile, is likely to pronounce the order on Indrani’s bail application on Friday. Indrani had filed a bail plea on February 5, stating that her health is deteriorating and she needs to recover and be fit enough to face the trial.

“Given the deteriorating medical condition it is essential in the interest of justice that the applicant be enlarged on bail and be allowed proper medical care and comfortable environment for recovery so that she case efficaciously prepare for the trial and face it,” read the bail plea.

Indrani’s bail application is filed under section 437, of the Criminal Procedure Code, giving option of bail to a woman on her health ground. Relying heavily on medical reports from JJ Hospital and Indrani’s health condition, the bail application stated that she needs systematic care, which is not possible while she is in custody.

The central agency, however, objected the bail application stating that as per the team of the doctors who examined her she is on the path of recovery and she is getting all the required treatment in the jail.
