The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin the second phase of the Census from February next year.

The process of population enumeration is where every person in the city will be counted and the exact population of the city, its age, gender ratio and other details, will be recorded.

“The second phase of a detailed enumeration will begin across the country on February 9 and will be completed by February 28. The revision period will begin from April 5,” joint director (Census), Dr SS Hiremath, said.

“Whoever is in the state during this time will be counted during this exercise. The same enumerators who did the house listing will conduct the second phase,” Hiremath added.

He also said that during the house listing phase, institutions like old homes, orphanages, hostels and institutions were not included, as the government did not want to keep a large time gap between the listing of these institutions and the biometrics. “From October 25, we will list these institutions too,” Hiremath said.

Meanwhile, provisional figures obtained during the house listing exercise shows the city’s population to be at 1.43 crore and about 90 lakh living in slums.

The trends of the population distribution shows that the more than 42% of the total population is concentrated in the western suburbs.

According to estimates, there are 28,906 house blocks in the city (one house block =150 houses).
