After introducing 15-car trains on the main line between CST and Kalyan, the Central Railway has decided to conduct a feasibility study for 15-car fast locals beyond Kalyan. It has also set a target of the year-end to convert all services into 12-car from 9-car on the Thane-Vashi trans-harbour line, which is expected to come as a huge big relief to suburban commuters.

On Tuesday, CR started 16 services with its new 15-car trains, which can carry at least 25% more commuters as compared to 12-car trains. The services have received an overwhelming response from commuters and there is an increasing demand for an extension of 15-car train services till Karjat/Khopoli station.

“We are going to study the possibility of running 15-car fast trains beyond Kalyan,” said a senior railway official. He said they were also planning to check whether 15-car trains could be given stops at select major stations after extending the length of platforms beyond Kalyan. But, this would be ascertained only after studying the feasibility.

The official said on the Thane-Vashi trans-harbour line CR was running a total of 210 services including 80 nine-car services.
