A 50-year-old Bangladeshi was arrested on Thursday night for illegally possession .22mm pistol magazine and seven live cartridges.
The accused, Abdus Salam Mohamed Abdul Karim — a resident of Gulchan in Dhaka, Bangladesh — is the chairman of a production company in Dhaka and was in the city for a business meeting.
“The accused has been booked on charges of Arms Act. He has been remanded to police custody till Monday,” said Amitabh Gupta, Additional Commissioner of Police (West region).
Karim is the chief executive officer of Ekushay TV, a Bangladesh-based television channel. “He was to attend a meeting with officials of Zee Channel in the city. The accused has a valid passport and a valid arms licence,” said Brijesh Singh, deputy commissioner of police, Zone VIII.
The police said Karim was caught while he was returning to Dhaka.
“He was to board the Jet Airways flight from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport scheduled to depart at 8.20 am on Thursday. During the routine check, he was intercepted by the Central Industrial Service Force (CISF) officials as Karim was reportedly found to have a .22 mm magazine and seven rounds on him.”
The police said Karim was taken into custody and questioned by an immigration officer. Later, the CISF handed over Karim to the Sahar Airport police around 5.30 pm.
During interrogation, Karim explained that he had come to attend a business meeting with the Zee Channel. “He had left his pistol at his home in Dhaka,” said an officer.
Karim has been charged under the Arms Act, was produced before the metropolitan Court at Andheri on Friday.
