Ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, the top leadership of the state and Mumbai Congress unit is expected to undergo a change.

State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, who has been holding the additional charge of the city unit after Kripashankar Singh’s exit, is likely to be replaced. The city Congress unit, too, is likely to get a new leader, said sources.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan held a meeting with senior leaders in New Delhi last weekend.

Also, several Congress ministers and legislators were in the national capital on Friday to lobby for their candidates. Both Chavan and Thakre refused to comment on the issue on Friday.

A senior Congress leader said that the party would attempt to strike a regional and social balance while appointing the state president. While a non-Maratha president is likely to be appointed at the state level, the Mumbai party high command is expected to choose between a Maharashtrian and a non-Maharashtrian candidate.

A Congress leader, who is close to Chavan, said that the CM is expected to reshuffle the Cabinet only after the organisational changes are made.

“The party leadership may change by mid-February,” said the leader, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
