Actor Govinda is likely to go on trial next month in a 2008 assault case registered against him at the Goregaon police station. The Borivli Metropolitan Magistrate court framed charges against the actor on Saturday. If Govinda is proved guilty, he may face imprisonment of up to four years.

The incident happened in January 2008, when Govinda slapped Santosh Rai, a visitor, alleging that Rai was misbehaving with artistes, including women.

As per the case registered, Rai was visiting the Filmistan studios in Goregoan where the actor was shooting for ‘Money Hai to Honey Hai’.

It was alleged that Rai was misbehaving with the artistes there, and allegedly kicked the leg of a chair on which Govinda was seated. Annoyed with the behaviour, the actor slapped him.

Rai, however, filed a case of assault at Goregaon police station. The actor was charged under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (Punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

“The court on Saturday charged Govinda under various sections of the IPC but he has pleaded not guilty in the case and will face trial,” said Akhilesh Dubbey, advocate for Govinda. Dubbey added that Rai’s allegations were baseless. “The studio is a private place, he should not have even be allowed to enter the premises,” Dubbey said.
