The next target of the gang that robbed Saraswat Bank last month were banks in Goregaon, the police said.
On October 14, two persons were arrested for robbing the Saraswat Bank’s Charkop branch at gunpoint and taking away Rs 21 lakh. The robbery was the third in the suburbs in the past few months. The first robbery took place in June at Model Bank, Malad, and the second occurred in HDFC Bank, Borivli, in August.
The two accused, identified as Sonu Gorakh and Brahmajeet Dube, were arrested from Kandivli for their alleged role in the heist. According to the police, the accused led them to four other robbers.
However, investigations have revealed that the gang comprises 16 members and they have looted banks in Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi.
“The accused have told us that after looting nationalised banks in Malad and Kandivli, their next target were banks in Goregaon west,” said an officer from Kandivli crime branch on condition of anonymity, as he is not allowed to speak to the media.
However, the police claim that due to the media coverage, it is becoming difficult for them to trace the remaining gang members. “We have not been able to trace the money as well,” the officer said.
On October 9, three men posing as customers entered Saraswat Bank. They covered their faces with handkerchiefs and accosted the security guard, and the manager. There were no CCTV cameras installed in the branch.
According to the police, the gang was on its way to loot HDFC Bank in August, when they had decided on Saraswat Bank’s as the next target. They had noticed that the bank had no security man at the entrance.
