With a view to provide relief to railway commuters on the Konkan belt, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Monday  demanded a separate night train on the Mumbai-Sawantwadi route.

Chavan, in a letter to Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee, said  that Sawantwadi was the last and important station on the state’s border with Goa.

“If the station is converted into a junction, people from Konkan and Goa will be benefited,” he wrote. Chavan had earlier demanded more halts for super fast trains on the Konkan railway. Accordingly, the railway decided to have more halts for Karwar Express in the region.

The chief minister also said many trains on the Konkan railway route do not halt at stations in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts and that super fast trains should have at least one halt at Kankavli, Kudal or Sawantwadi.

He thanked Banerjee for announcing survey of a new railway lines on Sawantwadi-Belgaum route in the Union Budget this year.
