After 10 years on the run, a 54-year-old alleged cheat was finally arrested by the Rabodi police on Friday.
Raghunath Ramnath alias Raghu Shastri, who lives in Vrindavan Society , has reportedly cheated people of lakhs of rupees, the police said.
“In 2000, the Delhi magistrate’s court had issued an absconding order against Raghunath in a cheating case. He had cheated Delhi resident Mohit Khanna of Rs 50 lakh. He had set up a fake paper manufacturing company and distributed booklets to raw material suppliers. Khanna supplied him with Rs 50 lakh worth of raw material, but never got his money,” said police sub-inspector Satish Ghotekar.
The Rabodi police had received the absconding order a year back.
“We got information that Raghunath was the same Raghu Shastri mentioned in the order. However, we worked towards confirming the information for a week and finally arrested him on Friday,” said Ghotekar.
Raghunath came to Thane four years back and has been staying with his wife under the name of R. Raghunath.
“His modus operandi was to create a fake company. He has had several companies under the name of Brown India and Crown India,” Ghotekar added.
“Raghunath would get the raw material from various suppliers, but not pay them. He would then sell the material in the market. When the suppliers would ask for money, he would say that the company made losses and has shut down,” he added.
The police are also looking for three more people who were Raghunath’s aides.
