A 24-year-old woman committed suicide by throwing herself in front of a speeding train because her boyfriend had allegedly raped her and was blackmailing her with some photographs.
The Samta Nagar police arrested her 27-year-old boyfriend Gopi Rawal late on Saturday night from his Mira Road home. Rawal was produced in the court on Sunday and has been sent to police custody.
The victim, a resident of Damu Nagar in Kandivli (East), and Rawal, who worked as a driver with a lawyer, were having an affair.
The girl went missing from her house in the wee hours of July 15. "Her father was to drop her to Nalanda College in Gorai where she was pursuing a degree in law. However, when he did not find her in the house, he checked with her friends and then lodged a complaint," said Assistant Police Inspector Sunil Zaware.
The following day, the Borivli Government Railway Police (GRP) informed the Samta Nagar police and the girl’s parents that a woman resembling the description of the missing girl had committed suicide near Vasai Road station.
The girl’s parents identified the body at Vasai Government Hospital.
The girl has left a four-page suicide note. The note said that she was having an affair with Rawal for the past few months.
The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the victim met Rawal when she attended classes for her civil services entrance exams in 2009. Rawal used to call her and they used to chat frequently. They started having an affair but Rawal lied to her saying he was a rich businessman and owned a bungalow and several cars.
Additional Commissioner of Police (North region) Ramrao Pawar said, "When the girl found out about his occupation and the fact that he was married and also had a kid, she tried to snap all ties with him. Following this Rawal started blackmailing her with the obscene photographs that he had clicked during their intimate moments."
