A close aide of Chhota Rajan gang sharpshooter Satish Kalya, the main accused in the murder of crime reporter J Dey, was arrested along with two others in connection with an extortion case.
Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy, said on Monday that Prakash Nikam alias Pakya, 31, the Satish Kalya aide, was nabbed along with Sachin Patil, 21, and Mahendra Bhoi, 22, from outside the Bandra (East) railway station by the Unit 8 crime branch on November 13 afternoon.
Two revolvers, a country made revolver and several live rounds were recovered from the arrested accused who have been booked on charges ranging from extortion to threatening.
According to the police, Prakash had already collected Rs. 2.4 lakh ransom money from a businessman dealing with decoration and catering at Kherwadi, earlier.
In the second week of this month, he renewed his demand and asked for Rs 1 lakh more as protection money. The victim lodged a complaint with the Kherwadi police station.
Crime branch sleuths, who began a parallel probe, trailed the gangsters. On Sunday, crime branch sleuths were tipped off that the gangsters would be coming to a place outside Bandra railway station to collect the extortion ransom. Accordingly, a trap was laid in the vicinity. When gangsters were spotted around 1.30 pm, they were rounded up.
