Sujata Nikalje, wife of fugitive gangster Rajendra Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan has moved the Bombay high court seeking orders to the Passport Authorities to renew her passport so that she could travel to see her daughter studying at a university in Australia.
According to her petition, Sujata was invited for a function celebrating Mothers’ Day by her daughter’s university, and she moved the designated Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court seeking permission for renewal of her passport, which expired on January 27, 2008.
Sujata was arrested under MCOCA in 2005 and she is out on bail since 2007. The police had opposed her plea before the MCOCA court stating the fugitive gangster had business links in Australia and if Sujata was allowed to go there, she won’t return back. After hearing both sides, the court rejected her plea.
Sujata has contended in the high court that her daughter was being deprived of her mother’s love, affection and company which was affecting her mentally as she is alone in Melbourne. She has also stated she has immovable properties in Mumbai and has deep roots in the society here and therefore there were no chances of her absconding. Besides, she said her trial has been pending for the last four years and there were no indications of it commencing soon.
