Corporators from the city have cleared without discussion a demand to grant themselves free life membership to municipal swimming pools and clubs in the city. Overlooking protests by various NGOs against the move, the elected representatives on Monday hastily passed a notice of motion (demand letter), which sought membership for current as well as former corporators.
The notice of motion was placed before mayor Shraddha Jadhav by Shiv Sena corporator Manmohan Chon-kar, 61, and it stated that since corporators were like trustees of the civic body and even after retirement they continued to do social work, all of them should be provided life membership to civic swimming pools.
Krishnaraj Rao, a city-based RTI activist who is opposed to the move, has written a letter to the mayor that has been signed by 17 prominent citizens. “We — the citizens of Mumbai — are disgusted by this move and condemn the hypocrisy of disguising their (corporators’) greed behind the proposed concessions,” the letter reads.
Interestingly, Monday’s was one of the last meetings to be held by the existing corporators before the model code of conduct is likely to come into force for the civic polls scheduled to be held in February next year.
