The city is likely to witness its lowest rainfall in a decade this August with Mumbai receiving just 244.6mm of rain till Sunday evening this month. With moderate showers expected over the next few days, weather officials expect the month to end with total rainfall below the previous low of 290.3mm experienced in 2009.
The trend, weathermen said, is worrying as conventionally monsoon picks up during August. The average rainfall in August over the past decade has been 693.47mm — almost three times the rain received this month.
Weather officials said they had expected a subdued monsoon in August, but the performance has been below average. “After the poor rainfall in July, our analysis had shown that the city and the state would receive moderate showers throughout August. But we have witnessed below normal rainfall,” said NY Apte, deputy director-general, IMD.
“Similar to July, there was hardly any system buildup that could facilitate steady rainfall. All the rain witnessed in August was owing to local moisture conditions that led to quick cloud formations.”
